BEST-SELLING ILLUSTRATOR LAURIE McGAW OFFERS ART FOR LICENSING

Shelburne, Ontario, Canada (May 25, 2006) --For the first time, award-winning illustrator and portrait artist Laurie McGaw is offering her art for licensing. Of the 13 books she has illustrated, many have become bestsellers: Polar The Titanic Bear has sold over 683,000 copies to date, in 5 languages.

Polar The Titanic Bear is the true story of a young boy and his toy bear who survived the Titanic. Laurie’s beautiful, evocative watercolors, in perfect period style, captivate young and old alike. Polar, in his sailor jacket, seen traveling with his companion Douglas in various countries, has become a popular and lovable character with millions of readers around the world.

In the New York Times Book Review (Nov.14, 2005), Laurie’s illustrations for African Princess: The Amazing Lives of Africa’s Royal Women were described as “stunning.” These oil portraits help to bring the biographies of some of Africa’s royal women throughout history to life. The African American reviewer wrote: “My 8-year-old was enthralled by the…lives of the women profiled in this extraordinary new book.”

To Be A Princess: The Fascinating Lives of Real Princesses (2001) has been very successful, with over 100,000 copies sold to date. The stories of 12 real princesses reveal to us what life is like behind the palace walls. These richly detailed oil paintings of the young princesses who would become famous monarchs appeal to women, children, and royalty fans of all ages. The portraits include England’s Queens Elizabeth I, Victoria, and Elizabeth II.

Two notable books Laurie has illustrated depict Jewish themes: Avram’s Gift (2003) featuring “exquisite watercolor illustrations” (Canadian Jewish News) and Journey To Ellis Island (1998). Filled with historical images, as well as those of modern-day family celebrations, these books provide a source for charming scenes of Jewish life.

Something To Remember Me By (1997) is about memories and love across the generations: it has won 6 major book awards, including the Benjamin Franklin Award, and has sold 350,000 copies to date. The story that inspired The Illustrated Father Goose (1995) was made into a major Hollywood motion picture starring Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin: Fly Away Home.

Over a career that spans nearly three decades, Laurie has become noted for the sense of timelessness and warmth she brings to her work. Many well-known figures have been the subjects of her portraiture, such as jazz pianist Oscar Peterson and director Norman Jewison. Whether for commissioned works, historical paintings, or illustrated books, Laurie’s love is painting people. Many of these classic images are now available for licensing.
